In the opening segment of the face-off between team Jay Chou and team Wang Feng, the teams took turns to sing its opponent’s songs. Like us, fans might be wondering how each team would perform given how the different Jay Chou and Wang Feng’s styles are.
Team Jay Chou took the challenge of singing 恒星, where the team delivered a warm rendition of the song interjected with a short rap.
Team Wang Feng sang 蜗牛. The whole performance was soothing and mellow, we guessed that the contestants wanted to keep their ‘bullets’ for the individual battles.
In the face-off round, individual members of the teams are paired with their opponents for a showdown. Their performance will be judged by a panel of 51 judges from the music industry. The contestants with the highest number of votes will get to advance to the next round.
Round 1: Xiang Yang, Nathan Hartono (天台的月光) vs Lin Kai Lun (Writing’s on the wall)
The charming contestant that many Singaporeans are looking forward to — Xiang Yang hailing from Singapore. The 25-year-old didn’t disappoint as he took the opportunity to showcase his many musical talents including playing the guitar, beat box and ad lib — all rolled into one uplifting performance.
Compared to Xiang Yang’s performance, Kai Lun’s was less dramatic so you could actually focus on her vocals. Kai Lun’s edge is her slightly coarse voice but overall her performance was a little flat and at times pitchy.
Verdict: Xiang Yang: 41 votes vs Lin Kai Lun: 10. votes. Team Jay Chou’s Xiang Yang won.
Round 2: Zeng Min Jie (爱什么稀罕) vs Jiang Dun Hao (离开北京)
Min Jie pulled off Ah Mei’s 爱什么稀罕 with ease and loads of attitude. Her relaxed style of singing and jiving on stage were a delight to watch.
Dun Hao picked a rather difficult number — an unknown song that could come across as somewhat dull. But fortunately for the 21-year-old singer, he succeeded in delivering a heartfelt rendition of the song by injecting the right emotions and emphasis into song. Listening to Dun Hao sing was like hearing a beautiful story unfold.
Verdict: Zeng Min Jie: 16 votes vs Jiang Dun Hao: 35 votes. Team Wang Feng won this round.
Round 3: Low Profile (平凡之路) vs Zheng Jia Wen (Lost Starts)
It’s the Di Diao duo that many have been looking forward to! From the interjection of singing and rap to the perfect harmonisation, the duo was a match made in heaven. De Su’s machine-gun rapping was simply unbelievable.
Jia Wen did a nice job of delivering Lost Starts. He was able to switch between his falsetto range and normal range quite smoothly. However, we felt his performance paled in comparison to Di Diao’s excellent delivery before him.
Verdict: Low Profile: 38 votes vs Zheng Jia Wen: 13 votes. Team Jay Chou won.
Round 4: Yu Tian (搁浅) vs Xu Ge Yang (横冲直撞)
Yu Tian was not only great at singing, his piano skills were remarkable too. Singing his mentor Jay Chou’s song 搁浅, he moved the audience with his beautiful vocals. We especially loved how he managed to build a nice climax to the song by stretching his vocals and holding back at the right moments.
Ge Yang’s coarse, powerful vocals was a force to be reckoned with. Ge Yang’s rock style of singing imparted lots of raw energy to the song. Definitely one of the best performances of the night for us.
Verdict: Yu Tian: 16 votes vs Xu Ge Yang 35 votes. Team Wang Feng won this round.
Round 5: Pu Xiang (Is this love) vs Liu Wen Tian (晚安北京)
Singing “Is this love”, Pu Xiang’s performance felt like he was singing at a rock concert with his rough vocals and excellent electric guitar skills.
Wen Tian’s vocals had the ability to make one sit up and listen from the first sentence. We though his allure lies in his power to convey a sense of cosmic mystic and soulfulness and that was both calming and unsettling at the same time.
Verdict: Pu Xiang: 20 votes Liu Wen Tian: 31 votes. Team Wang won again.
