中国新歌声 (SING CHINA) Episode 11: Team Na Ying face off team Harlem Yu

Team Harlem Yu on episode 11 of Sing China 2016
Team Harlem Yu

The show opened to a roaring start with members of team Na Ying and the veteran singer herself taking turns to perform a medley of Harlem’s classics including 靠近, 报告班长 and 整晚的音樂. This was followed by team team Harlem Yu performing a selection of Na Ying’s classics such as 白天不懂夜的黑 together with their mentor Harlem.

The great line up had us sitting up, gearing for a heated performance to come. In the face-off round, the two teams’ square off is judged by a panel of 51 judges from the music industry.

Round 1: Li Pei Ling (Fight Song) vs Wang Chuang (逃亡)

First to be called into the Na Ying- Harlem Yu square-off is Penang-born Li Pei Ling. Pei Ling’s rousing, punchy number coupled with her clean image reminded us of a modern National Day song — not a bad performance overall.

Hearing Wang Chuang take the stage once again, we were reminded of how much we liked her sweet yet powerful voice. Her rendition of 逃亡  sounded a little like the original version by Stephanie Sun, just more powerful. While strong overall, we felt that her performance was a little safe.

Verdict: Li Pei Ling: 38 votes, Wang Chuang: 13 votes. Team Na Ying won in this round.

Round 2: Yang Bo (楓) vs Yang Mei Na (黃豆)

This was an interesting round because it was a battle of between soothing and powerful house. Known for his gentle, soothing voice, Yang Bo delivered a warm and calming rendition of Jay Chou’s 楓. Wang Feng commented Yang Bo could try injecting more emphasis into some of the phrases to make his performance stand out more.

Mei Na livened up the stage with her upbeat number. Her voice was full of attitude as usual and her showmanship was great to watch.

Verdict: Yang Bo: 16 votes vs Yang Mei Na: 35 votes. Team Harlem won in this round.

Round 3: Wan Ni Da (不潮不用花钱) vs Ji Ke Hao (靜心等)

Rap, bold and creative — the three words the summed up Wan Ni Da’s performance. While we enjoyed her performance, we thought it was a little flat. We were left waiting for a climax that never really took place.

Ji Ke Hao

Ji Ke Hao put up a fun performance that was flawless from start to end. Singing an old Shanghainese classic, he amused the audience with his quirky vocals and east meets west style of singing, making him a standout of the night.

Verdict: Wan Ni Da: 19 votes vs Ji Ke Hao: 32 votes. Team Harlem clinched the win again this round. Wan Ni Da was voted by Na Ying to stay on to compete in the elimination round.

Round 4: Wang Cheng Rei (友情岁月) vs Zhao Xiao Xi (Happy)

Cheng Rei pulled off a Cantonese ballad, 友情岁月 by Ekin Cheng. Her old-school and dramatic delivery worked very well with the classic, injecting a sense of nostalgia in the air.

We couldn’t help but think Xiao Xi picked the wrong song. The poor dude looked rather awkward dancing on stage while singing a song that seemed to big for his voice. He didn’t look all that happy to us.

Verdict: Wang Cheng Rei: 34 votes vs Zhao Xiao Xi: 27 votes. Team Na Ying emerged as the winner of this round. So far, it was a tie between the two teams. Harlem Yu picked Xiao Xi to continue in the elimination round.

Round 5: Su Li Sheng (流着泪说分手) vs Yao Xi (醉拳)

Li Sheng’s performance must have moved hearts with his earnest and emotional rendition of 流着泪说分手. Thanks to his good voice control, there was plenty of climax in the song without going overboard with emotions.

Playing the er hu, Yao Xi weaved modern style of singing into an old classic. Perhaps to fit the lyrics of the song, Yao Xi sang with a slight slur, as if she was drunk. But the slur was more evident when she sang in Mandarin than Cantonese, revealing a slight flaw in her performance.

Verdict: Su Li Sheng: 26 votes vs Yao Xi: 25 votes. Team Na Ying won by a mere vote.

Elimination round: Wan Ni Da vs Zhao Xiao Xi.

Singing 不敢停止想你, Xiao Xi switched from his trademark falsetto voice and normal voice. We thought he had used his falsetto voice too excessively here.

Wa Ni Da has a way of fusing her own style into her every performance, such that it was hard to recognise what the original song was. In this case, she was singing Sally Yeh’s 焚心以火— at least that’s what the chorus sounded like. Her rap was excellent as usual — but not her usual singing, unfortunately.

Verdict: Wan Ni Da: 24 votes vs Zhao Xiao Xi: 27 votes. Team Harlem won.
