The 12 singers who have made it so far are coming together to vie for the top 6 spots in this season of Sing China. There are 2 rounds of judging in this round. First, the contestant would have to go through a gruelling voting process by 51 judges from the music industry. After that, the audience (350 of them) would be polled for their votes. The top 6 contestant with the highest votes would proceed to the next round.
Yu Tian 小镇姑娘 – Team Jay Chou
First to go was Yu Tian. He started off with singing in a slow tempo before building up to a more upbeat and modern rendition of the song. Yu Tian did well with both the arrangement of the song and his singing, which was very varied — mellow at first, then jazzy and rock at times — Overall a very rounded performance in terms of voice quality and showmanship. Noticed his trendy outfit? It was apparently styled by his mentor Jay Chou.
Total votes: Judges: 24, Audience: 239
Zhao Xiao Xi, 我要我们在一起 – Team Harlem Yu
Decked in a bright orange suit, Xiao Xi’s rendition of 我要我们在一起 had a strong disco vibe to it. It was a little like listening to Saturday Night Fever. Though we’re not a fan of his dancing, it was a very entertaining performance overall. The audience must have been moved by his performance as the majority of them voted for him.
Total votes: Judges: 18; Audience: 302
Li Pei Ling, 我知道你很难过 – Team Na Ying
Listening to Pei Ling sing, you would be surprised that the contestant from Penang is only 15. She displayed so much emotions and depth in her voice. Not only that, She also showed really good control in her perforamnce and only showcased the power of her her voice at selected moments.
Total votes: Judges: 39; Audience: 306
Xu Geyang 异类 – Team Wang Feng
After the soothing rendition from Pei Ling, the audience was brought into fight mode with Geyang’s performance. From singing to rapping, Geyang’s performance was charged with rage. On the whole, we couldn’t say we were impressed with her delivery as it felt somewhat one-dimensional. We felt that more variation would have been better.
Total votes: Judges: 40 ; Audience: 344
Nathan Hartono, Xiang Yang, Desperado – Team Jay Chou
Singapore’s talent house Nathan has shown vast improvement in his stage presence in this round. He seemed more natural and at ease with his delivery, without overacting his emotions to the point of looking comedic. Singing wise, he was charming — like his good looks — and carried the tune well — but we didn’t find his performance or singing exceptional.
Total votes: Judges: 47; Audience: 333
Ji Kehao 滚滚红尘 (Team Harlem Yu)
With some creativity, Kehao delivered a rather sultry version of 滚滚红尘. Kehao’s strength is his unique voice, strength of his vocals and individual style and he used all of that to his full advantage this round. His uniqueness might not have mass appeal like some of his competitors but he’s definitely an opponent to reckon with.
Total votes: Judges: 29; Audience: 337
Su Li Sheng 私奔 – Team Na Ying
When you’re stacked up against 11 other opponents who possess their own singing prowess, it would take extra effort to stand out. We think that was the key adversity Li Sheng faced in this round. His performance was good and we especially liked his raspy voice but it felt mediocre in the face of the strong competition.
Total votes: Judges: 30; Audience: 327
Jiang Dun Hao 傻瓜 – Team Wang Feng
We think Dun Hao suffered the same problem as Li Sheng — while a strong singer, he lacked individual style. Between Li Sheng and Dun Hao, our vote goes to the former for his hoarse voice quality.
Total votes: Judges: 33; Audience: 348
Low Profile duo 夜空中最亮的星 – Team Jay Chou
We think this is the first time we heard Zhang Xing Yue sing in slow tempo — even though it was only for a few stanza, it was clear that Xing Yue’s forte is his machine gun-rapping, not singing. He Shu was good as usual, with her powerful and resonant voice.
Total votes: Judges: 26; Audience: 322
Yang Meina 春泥 – Team Harlem Yu
Power house Yang Meina was next. The contestant’s voice and singing style has been likened to Rihanna — and it’s clear why. She has a powerful, explosive voice and exudes the confidence of a seasoned singer. From the start to the middle of the song, we were just waiting for Meina to release her power which she normally does, however, even though she did blast her vocals at one point, she seemed to practise a lot more restraint this round. We admire her courage to hold it in and not feel like she had to go full blast every time.
Total votes: Judges: 38; Audience: 323
Wang Chen Rui 你还要我怎么样 – Team Na Ying
There’s a certain sorrow in Chen Rui’s voice that makes her a true master at ballads. While variety is not her forte, we’re quite happy for her to continue doing what she’s great at — which are love song. Chen Rui’s good voice control and wide ranging vocal were remarkable.
Total votes: Judges: 44; Audience: 323
Liu Wen Tian 地心 – Wang Feng
Like Chen Rui, Wen Tian’s forte is also his ability to inject the right amount of melancholy in ballads. But Wen Tian stood out out in terms of his coarse voice, particularly when strained during the chorus.
Total votes: Judges: 34; Audience: 308
