中国新歌声 (SING CHINA) Episode 6: Team Wang Feng selects final 5 contestants

Team Wang Feng on Sing China episode 6
Team Wang Feng

Wang Feng’s team of 10 contestants is the first to go through an elimination round in which only half of the team will remain after episode 6 of 中国新歌声 Sing China. At this point, the competition gets more intense as the contestants from the same team will be paired up to have a ‘sing-off’. The team leader, in this case Wang Feng, will have to choose a winner from each of these sessions to go through to the next round. Wang Feng invited Singapore singer-songwriter Tanya Chua to be his special guest and to help him choose the worthy contestants to enter the next gruelling round.

Here’s the breakdown for 中国新歌声 Sing China episode 6:

Ari vs Zheng Jia Wen

Ari is off to a great start with his nifty guitar skills and rousing vocals with Michael Jackson’s Beat It. He is easily one of the most talented musicians on the programme and it seems initially that he will blaze through the round. Well, that was before Zheng Jia Wen sang of course. The moment he started singing Goodbye My Lover from James Blunt, it sealed the fate for Ari. Zheng Jia Wen’s fantastic tone, diction and emotion blew everyone away, including the judges and Tanya Chua.

Liu Xue Jing vs Xu Ge Yang

We felt that Liu Xue Jing’s initial performance in previous rounds was better. Singing See You Again by Charlie Puth, she seems to be playing catch up with the song and wasn’t on beat in some parts. Her attempt at whistle voice also is a little rough on the edges. Nevertheless, it was a good effort from her. Xu Ge Yang on the other hand was rock solid from start to end. She showcased her the amazing vocal range and spunk, winning the round in style.

Xiang Ya Hong vs Jiang Dun Hao

Xiang Ya Hong looks and sings like a Mandarin rocker from the 1980s. We are not saying his is not good, but it seems like he is a band vocalist than a soloist. After the screaming from Xiang, Jiang Dun Hao’s folk performance feels more controlled and had a lot more build up emotionally. After much deliberation, Wang Feng picked Jiang Dun Hao in the end.

Karen Lim vs Bai Ruoxi

Karen Lim from California sang a sassier version of 你要的愛 from Penny Tai. Clad in black leather top and leather pants, Karen showed a lot of personal style and went on to win girl-next-door Bai Ruoxi who gave a soothing but forgettable rendition of 追梦人.

Lui Jun Zhe vs Liu Wen Tian

Lui Jun Zhe commanded the stage the moment he went on. He showcased versatility in his vocals and even controlled his death metal screams very well. Liu Wen Tian on the other hand gave a horrid cover of Aerosmith’s Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing. Not only was the diction poor, he sounded so whinny and lacks the stage presence that the song required. And his screams nearly caused his vocals to break at the end of the song. However, as luck would have it, it was Liu Wen Tian that was selected for the next round. The only session we predicted wrongly.
