Get this, Hello Kitty is NOT a cat

Hello Kitty

We’re still trying to come to terms with this shocking revelation even as we write.

Sanrio, the official home of Hello Kitty & Friends, clarified that the cute Japanese character is not a cat but, but a human girl.

Now allow that to sink in.

This hoo-ha surfaced after Christine R. Yano, an anthropologist in Hawaii mistakenly (no shame in that) referred to Hello Kitty as a cat in a script while preparing for a Hello Kitty exhibition at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles.

Ms Yano explained to the L.A. Times:

That’s one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty.

A little bit of digging on the Sanrio website reveals even stranger facts. Hello Kitty’s real name is actually Kitty White, a British girl born in the suburbs of London.

Seriously, Sanrio only thought to clarify this after Hello Kitty’s 4 decades of existence? By the way, we’re still waiting for the explanation on why Kitty has no mouth and has cat-like whiskers.
