It was a dramatic end to I Am A Singer Season 3 in the grand final episode. China diva Han Hong was crowned the ‘King of Songs’, the first female singer to win the coveted title. Li Jian and Korean singer The One ranked second and third respectively, ending the season on a high note. The night also saw the shocking exit of Sun Nan, who withdrew from the competition after the first segment of the show.
Eason Chan bolstered Han Hong for an early lead
The 3-hour long grand final was split into 2 segments – a duet segment where each contestant will be paired with a guest singer of their choice and a PK (challenge) segment among the remaining contestants (one singer will be eliminated after the first segment). Hong Kong superstar Eason Chan assisted Han Hong in the first segment. Singing one of his top hit songs ‘Ten Years – 十年’, Eason Chan salvaged what could have been a disastrous performance when the live band ‘went to sleep’ in the second half of the song. He led the band back on track and completed the duet with Han Hong in style. Han Hong went on to win the competition by a huge margin, garnering 44.35% of total votes.
Dream pairing David Tao and Anson Hu failed to impress
Both David Tao and Anson Hu are singers we admire a lot. In fact, David Tao was one of the singers that popularised R&B in Asia and brought on a wave of R&B mandopop singers and music. This pairing of David and Anson was really a dream came true for us. The song chosen was David’s ‘Black Tangerine – 黑色柳丁’. And the result? One messy performance that was way below our expectations. The harmonisation sounded awkward, the ad lib was all over the place and both singers seemed lost in their own world. Keep them apart we say.
Dark horse Sitar Tan and other notable performances
Surprisingly, the best duet came from Sitar Tan and China’s godfather of rock, Cui Jian. Their ‘Fish and Bird in Love – 鱼鸟之恋’ was a stark contrast to David and Anson’s clashing performance. Although it wasn’t their first time performing the song, their rendition was one where the vocals, arrangement and showmanship all came together. Other notable duets include Korean singers The One and Lyn Lee Se-jin 李世真’s love ballad ‘I Believe’. Both award-winning singers gave a solid, pitch-perfect and touching rendition of this popular Korean song.
Sun Nan’s shocking withdrawal
Sun Nan became the most discussed singer on Chinese social media after his alarming withdrawal from the competition after the first segment. Announcing his intentions to give up the title race just before the first segment results, Sun Nan said that he wanted to give up his chance so that the rest of the cohort would stand a higher chance at the title. However, most social media fans felt that he lacked sportsmanship and that the act of pulling out was disrespectful to the audience of the show. “I am happy that my ‘sister’ Han Hong won the competition today. She deserves it. My decision to withdraw was made during my rehearsal the day before,” said Sun Nan after the show. The show producer unveiled that Sun Nan ranked fourth in the first segment.
