Sun Nan finally had the opportunity to top the table in this round of I Am A Singer 3 with his Cantonese song performance. Conversely, Sitar Tan’s cover of ‘Firework’ was a major flop and she came in at sixth. Her combined scores for both rounds were the lowest and she was eventually knocked out of the competition. She will join the rest of the eliminated singers in the ‘Breakthrough round’ next week. A-Lin, Han Hong and Sun Nan, the first wave of singers who survived the several knockout rounds, earned their golden ticket to the Grand Finale in this round.
Here’s a break down of the contestants’ performances in round 11 of the competition (in order of appearance):
1. The One 郑淳元 – 暗香
The One chose a rather flat song for round 11. For listeners not familiar with 暗香, the song can be a little too artsy, not something most people take a liking to instantly. The song arrangement chosen was also straightforward without much of a surprise. So for someone not well versed in Mandarin, The One’s song choice was ambitious. However, he was able to masterfully use his voice to captivate the audience. In the second part of the song, The One showcased his awesome mix voice range – blending of chest voice and head voice – to finish strong. We could see that his Mandarin has improved a great deal during the competition.
2. Li Jian 李健 – 陀螺
Singing a song about life experiences, Li Jian’s rendition of 陀螺 is our favourite from him in I Am A Singer 3. It was a very simple, straightforward and non-extravagant performance from Li Jian. Never one to choose a popular song just to please the audience, Li Jian’s moving and earnest performance was something we have learned to appreciate. This folk song called ‘Spin Top’ is best enjoyed with eyes closed.
3. Han Hong 韩红 – 红蔷薇
They say ‘sing like you speak’. That is exactly what Han Hong did in round 11. Adopting what is commonly known as ‘folk’ voice, Han Hong refrained from using all her precious vocal techniques and went ‘nude’ instead, a stark departure from her usual vocal range-boasting performance. Han Hong gave a steady performance and ended the song with a whistling outro. Whether you like her or not – as she is known to be proud and arrogant – Han Hong showed real class with her ability to turn many songs in this competition into masterpieces.
4. Sitar Tan WeiWei 谭维维 – Firework
We are always excited to listen to Chinese singers cover an English song. They can either delight or shock you by giving a fresh take on the song. Unfortunately for Sitar Tan, it was the latter in round 11. Not only was her voice shaky, it felt like she was struggling to finish the song. Even the rowdy Brazilian drums couldn’t save her this time.
5. A-Lin 黄丽玲 – 爱
爱 is one of our favourite hit songs from diva Karen Mok. We always felt that Karen Mok gave her songs such strong identities that other singers who attempt to cover her songs come off sounding like poor imitations. But it was not the case for A-Lin. A-Lin’s attractive mid-range and powerful high notes added new colours to this love song about painful love and lasting memories. Well done A-Lin! Karen Mok will be proud.
6. Ricky Xiao Huang-Chi 萧煌奇 – 让
Not many people know that the song 让, first recorded by Aska Yang 杨宗纬, was actually written by Ricky Xiao. The song was penned for a girl he had to give up due to his then humble background and the fact that he was blind. Ricky’s version of the song was more heartwarming than sad and more stirring than somber when compared to Aska’s rendition. There was also a sense of innocence and pureness in his performance. Keep writing these amazing songs, Ricky!
7. Sun Nan 孙楠 – 说不出再见
A tribute to Hong Kong entertainment veteran Alan Tam, Sun Nan chose a Cantonese number 说不出再见 by Alan Tam for round 11. It was his way of expressing his gratitude to Alan when the then little known Sun Nan was invited to be special guest singer in Alan’s 1993 concert. It was a memorable moment to Sun Nan till this day. Singing the song in a much higher key, Sun Nan’s squeaky clean voice and high pitches impressed the audience and fellow singers, who voted him to be the number one singer for this round of the competition.
Here’s the final ranking for I Am A Singer 3 round 11 (and combined ranking for round 10 and 11):
