All eyes were on the new challenger in round 7 of I Am A Singer 3. The producers of the show managed to convince Korean superstar The One (郑淳元) to take part in the competition and be the challenger for this round. The overall champion for I Am A Singer Season 2 in Korea, where the show originated from, The One more than delivered by coming in first, sending a strong statement to the rest of the competition.

Here’s a break down of the contestants’ performances in round 7 of the competition (in order of appearance):

1. Jane Zhang 张靓颖 – 是否

One of the classic songs of Julie Su (苏芮), the song 是否 is normally only covered by singers who have certain confidence in their vocals. Obviously, Jane Zhang thinks she is one such singer. She got the vocal chops all right but her delivery lacked depth. We were left scratching our heads over what message she was sending with the emotional number which she interspersed with dance steps. A song that was released even before she was born, the slow intro followed by a cutesy rock arrangement only goes to show her lack of understanding for the song.

2. Sun Nan 孙楠 – 花瓣雨

Singing the song that made Sun Nan an overnight success in China and Hong Kong, Sun Nan hopes to reminiscence the breakout moment he had 20 years ago. A song that meant a lot to him, it was a pitch-perfect performance that showcased his exceptional vocal control.

3. Li Jian 李健 – 今天是你的生日,妈妈

Dressed in a simple white shirt and playing the guitar, Li Jian is a composer and singer who knows his strengths very well. His ability to magnetise the audience is a skill not to be taken lightly. Singing a folk song about mothers, the accompanying guitars, cello and cajon paired with his soothing voice, stirring up emotions and heartstrings of anyone who misses their family.

4. Sitar Tan WeiWei 谭维维 – 开门见山

As a singer who likes to flaunt her vocal techniques endlessly, especially in round 6 of I Am A Singer 3 where she was the challenger, Sitar Tan used once again put her powerful vocals to good use in round 7. Using a raspy voice technique, she made the rock song ‘rock solid’. Although she added some new elements of fusion rock to the song (think Kid Rock), we still preferred A-Mei’s original version.

Leo Ku 古巨基 – 明星

Rearranged by fellow contestant Anson Hu, who was eliminated in round 5, Leo Ku was emotionally charged during the performance. Perhaps due to the unwillingness to leave the stage of I Am A Singer 3, or the fact that he was overwhelmed by the support of fans during the competition, Leo Ku was all tears by the end of the song. With the music arrangement that gave this Leslie Cheung classic a new lease of life, we are sure the karaoke bars will be ringing with this version of the song.

5. Han Hong 韩红 – 回到拉萨

Han Hong is feeling the heat after ranking lowly for the past few rounds. And with a new challenger that is after a spot in the competition, the pressure must be suffocating for her. Having sleeping for less than 4 hours before the competition and making a major last minute change to her performance, Han Hong pulled all stops to not repeat the unsatisfactory results. Her voice and range was indisputably amazing in delivering a strenuous song about Tibet. For all her effort, she came in 2nd in this round.

6. A-LIN 黄丽玲 – 她说

A-LIN first performed this song at the 22nd Golden Melody Awards where she received praises from the audience as well as from the song’s original singer JJ Lin. Performing a more polished version than the one at the awards, A-LIN’s version was perhaps a little too polished and lacks spontaneity. However, while she may not have the most powerful voice or the widest range, her phrasing of the song was simply beautiful.

7. The One 郑淳元 – 那个男人

Hailed as the Brian McKnight of Korea, The One (郑淳元) chose a Chinese song for his first appearance on China’s ‘I Am A Singer’ to show respect for the show. As it was the first time he sang it in Mandarin, his diction was not perfect. However, that did nothing to hide his amazing voice. His delivery was so up close and personal that he seems to be singing only to you. An alluring vocal tone that is both husky and clear, we were glued to the mesmerizing performance. What a voice!
