Sun Nan replaced Leo Ku as the new host for I Am A Singer 3. Even though Sun Nan was well-versed in the language, the first time host was nervous and at times lost for words. Jane Zhang bowed out of the competition after coming in last overall in 2 rounds.
Here’s a break down of the contestants’ performances in round 8 of the competition (in order of appearance):
1. Han Hong 韩红 – 橄榄树
After swopping her order of appearance with Jane Zhang, Han Hong was the first to come onstage. Han Hong invited Anson Hu to rearrange 橄榄树 (Olive Tree) for this elimination round and it was a refreshing take on this classic song. From a slow start to an epic finish, the arrangement allowed Han Hong to showcase her amazing range and musicality. But perhaps it was also the new arrangement that made Han Hong a little bit unsure about the rhythm of the song at some parts of the performance.
2. The One 郑淳元 – You Raise Me Up
Avoiding Mandarin songs for the competition, The One 郑淳元 chose ‘You Raised Me Up’ for this round, which was popularised by Josh Groban. Covered and recorded by hundreds of singers to varying degrees of success, the song was orignially written by Irish-Norwegian duo, Secret Garden. The One performed the challenging song expectedly well. His addition of a Korean verse as well as ad-lib for last parts of the song was what made the difference. He sang the same song for the Korea’s version of I Am A Singer too but we were still very bothered by his English diction.
3. Sun Nan 孙楠 – 执迷不悔
Deviating from his usual loud and at times over-bearing vocals, Sun Nan’s round 8 performance was more restrained and likeable. Although he was back to belting at the ending part of the song, he managed to put up a decent ballad. Perhaps it was the pressure of hosting or perhaps it was him consciously singing in ‘restrain mode’, a style that is not his strong suit, Sun Nan doesn’t seem to be quite himself in this round. Who knows, it might be a new Sun Nan in the making.
4. Jane Zhang 张靓颖 – 冬天里的一把火
We applaud Jane Zhang for being the singer that provides variation in the competition with her fast numbers in a sea of ballads. Her round 8 performance seems more suitable for a Chinese New Year countdown party than for I Am A Singer. Her style of singing is getting a bit boring and her OL (Office Lady) dress sense in round 6 for 忘情桑巴舞 and this round’s 冬天里的一把火 seems more suitable for strutting than for dancing. Or maybe her graphic prints this round were to match her 80’s disco arrangement. We are not sure but its not very ‘sexy music’, Jane.
5. Sitar Tan WeiWei 谭维维 – 也许明天
Performing an A-Mei song again for this round, Sitar Tan was not able to connect with audience. Her performances so far in this competition had been cold and distant. And being a bit tight at the upper vocal registers of this song didn’t help her either. Too eager to show-off everything she is vocally capable off, Sitar Tan was in your own world and void of emotions. We were just hoping her voice don’t break and thankfully, it didn’t.
6. A-Lin 黄丽玲 – 忘记拥抱
A-Lin stuck to her ballads and chose a lesser-known song from Wilber Pan in this round of the competition. Even though A-Lin switched to a higher key for the last chorus of the song, the song in itself lacks climax and makes A-Lin’s rendition sound like a nice karaoke performance. We said before that her phrasing of songs was beautiful, coupled with a warm vocal timbre, A-Lin’s ability to let you connect with her and the song instantly saved the performance.
7. Li Jian 李健 – 当你老了
Li Jian is truly the dark horse in this competition. Cool and nonchalant, Li Jian was not in the least bit bothered by the belters and overseas talents. He went through the round in his usual story-telling style and came out tops. Singing a song about getting old, he was able to resonate with the audience. In fact, Li Jian was so unassuming that you might even miss him belting out some difficult high notes in the song.
Here’s the final ranking for I Am A Singer 3 round 8 (and combined ranking for round 7 and 8):
