Straight after the duets, singers are paired up for a face-off round where 3 winning singers will be selected for the eventual crowning of the “King of Singers”. At this point, singers still don’t know who was eliminated from the duets round but if you read our previous feature you would know that Joey Yung didn’t make it (poor Joey was kept in the dark the whole time).
Here’s a breakdown of the performances (in order of appearance):
Old Wolf 老狼 – 米店 vs Jeff Chang 张信哲 – 天空之城
The first pair to face-off is Old Wolf and Jeff Chang. Old Wolf’s cover of 米店 is unhurried and peaceful, a tune that reflected his attitude towards his brand of music. His shirt and jeans ensemble also seemed to aptly represent a man who is contented with life and his achievements. Jeff on the other hand had an elaborate stage complete with a choir and a tailored white suit with pattern of wings sewn on the back. It felt like both singers were happy to reach this stage of the competition and elevated from the pressure they went through preparing songs for their previous rounds.
Winner: Jeff Chang
Hacken Lee 李克勤 – 爱是永恒 vs Hwang Chi Yeol 黄致列 – 王妃
Hacken’s face-off partner is non other than Hwang Chi Yeol, the most popular contestant on season 4 of I Am A Singer, in our opinion at least. Cleverly weaving in the tune of his most popular song Red Sun (红日) into Jacky Cheung’s Love is Forever (爱是永恒), Hacken gave one of his best performances on I Am A Singer 4. We were singing along with him during the last part of the song. Despite Hacken’s best effort, he was no match for Hwang Chi Yeol’s dance number 王妃. Showing his nifty moves (and toned arms of course) and versatile voice, Hwang Chi Yeol’s command of the stage and presence was definitely his winning edge. However, we didn’t like this arrangement at all and prefer the original rock version by Jam Hsiao.
Winner: Hwang Chi Yeol
Lala Hsu 徐佳莹 – 突然好想你 vs Coco Lee 李玟 – 月光爱人
The final pair to face-off is Lala Hsu and Coco Lee. Lala is a very talented singer that has a strong personal style. Singing the song from MayDay, she not only made it her own but made it better than the original song. Coco on the other hand picked her song ‘A Love Before Time’ from the soundtrack of Hidden Tiger Crouching Dragon. A song she performed at the 2001 Oscars, her performance was confident but was still over the top. She also put on the same cheongsam she wore to the Oscars. One that fits someone with a 21-inch waist only.
Winner: Coco Lee
In the end, it was Coco Lee who emerged as the grand champion of I Am A Singer Season 4. No matter what we think of her ‘Las Vegas’ style performances, Coco Lee put her heart and soul into planning and practicing for the entire season. From hippie wannabe in What’s Up to Lady Gaga Bad Romance, Coco Lee has showed us in more ways than one her music style and determination to keep her passion alive. Congratulations Coco!
