Following the exit of 2 previous challengers, Su Ying Ying and Wang Xi, episode 9 welcomes Kim Ji-mun as the new hope to wrestle one spot from the current list of singers in I Am A Singer Season 4. Selected out of 74 singers on a special programme planned by the production team called “I Am A Singer, who is the Challenger”, Kim first broke into the scene by competing on the Voice of China. He showed loads of talent vocally as well as in his song arrangements. But as fate would have it, Kim who was voted in 6th place didn’t make the cut in the face of more popular singers and seasoned performers.
Here’s a breakdown of the contestants’ performances in round 9 of the competition (in order of appearance):
1. Hacken Lee 李克勤 – 可惜不是你
With a thick Hong Kong accent and an old school vibrato, Hacken’s cover of this popular song was too much of of a drag for us. The slower tempo arranged for his performance certainly didn’t help either. It goes to show that singers need to innovate on their style even if it had worked well for them years ago.
2. Hwang Chi Yeol 黄致列 – 你只在比我高的地方
This is the song that turned Hwang Chi Yeol from an unknown to a superstar on the Korea hit show “Immortal Songs”. Even though it’s a song familiar to him, you can tell that he had put his heart and soul into the song to deliver yet another amazing performance. Not only were tears welling up in his eyes, every move he made on stage was on the beat and impactful. Truly a performance that deserved a standing ovation.
3. Joey Yung 容祖儿 – 煞科
Joey shows you that you don’t have to be a belter in order to give the audience a good performance. Singing an up tempo song by Sammi Cheng, Joey danced and even did an ‘anti-gravity’ move without panting or missing a beat. Our only gripe is that the lyrics was too repetitive and sounded outdated.
4. Coco Lee 李玟 – Stay With Me
We were not sure whether to be happy or sad when we knew that Coco Lee had picked Sam Smith’s ‘Stay With Me’ as her song for episode 9 of I Am A Singer 4. Happy because we love the song and couldn’t wait to listen to a good cover but sad because it’s Coco singing it. True enough, she ‘butchered’ the song with her emotionless voice. We are sticking only to Sam Smith for this song.
5. Lala Hsu 徐佳莹 – 相爱后动物感伤
After 9 episodes, one thing that Lala Hsu did consistently was picking the right songs that accentuated her style. In this round, she showed us the quirky and fun side of her while still being able to showcase her voice. But the song might be too alternative for the audience and she took the last place this episode. Also, she really ought to talk to her stylist.
6. Jeff Chang 张信哲 – 平凡之路
We were promised ‘big’ things before the start of Jeff’s performance. There were big girls, a big drum and big changes to the arrangement of the original song. But Jeff kind of fell short of the ‘big’ promise. He was sincere and earnest in his delivery, but his thin voice lacked the punch to take the song up a notch. Kudos to Jeff for fusing his song with Wiz Khalifa’s ‘See You Again’ though.
7. Kim Ji-mun 金志文 – 往事只能回味 (Challenger)
It took Kim Ji-mun so many rounds before he was selected to compete on the stage of I Am A Singer 4. However, we were disappointed that he had to waste his chance on a song like “往事只能回味”. It wasn’t that the song was bad or that Kim sang badly, it’s just that we knew he had a lot more in his library of cover songs that would have been more suitable for this crucial round. In our opinion, if he had picked “为爱疯狂”, his audition song for the Voice of China, he would have stood a better chance.
Here’s the final ranking for I Am A Singer 4 round 9:
Rank 1: Jeff Chang 张信哲 – 平凡之路
