It’s elimination round in this episode of I Am A Singer Season 3. The second round of the competition requires all 7 seven singers to cover a song by other singers than themselves. Both Jane Zhang and Kit Chan coincidentally decided to cover “God of Songs” Jacky Cheung’s number. Shedding her demure image for a sensual and sexy look, Jane Zhang’s rearranged ‘饿狼传说’ scored top marks from the audience while Singapore singer Kit Chan’s emotional performance of ‘心如刀割’ failed to impress. Having ranked last in both rounds, Kit Chan was eliminated from the show.
Here’s a break down of the contestants’ performances in round 2 of the competition (in order of appearance):
Singing a song she once covered in one of her concerts, this song was a walk in the park for Han. Her crystal clear voice and sincere delivery masterfully subdued the audience. It was a quiet scene throughout the song, interrupted occasionally by appreciative applause from the floor. But Han went one up by doing and acoustic version of the song and played the guitar herself. Now, that’s pretty awesome even for a singer of her calibre.
Similar to Jane Zhang, Kit Chan also chose a Jacky Cheung number for the night. Pitch-perfect throughout the song, Kit Chan’s flawless delivery won the accolades of the professional judges. Her unmistakeable singing style brought a lot of class to the show and showed that not every singer has to scream an impossible note to stand out.
However, she failed to impress the audience who voted for her to go. Kit Chan, who became the most talked about person on Chinese social media Weibo (her hashtag #hangonkitchan# received a million hits in 3 short hours), became the first ‘victim’ of the competition by coming in last in both rounds. It’s ok Kit, we still love you.
Being more experimental in musical styles, Sun Nan decided on a pop and tribal arrangement of the song ‘梦开始的地方’. To convey the cultural elements of the arrangement, Sun Nan not only dressed the part by draping a shawl with tribal prints over his white shirt but also got a Mongolian musician to play during his performance. The Chinese singer again came in fourth in this round.
Jane Zhang opted for a completely different performance in this round. Her fast number ‘饿狼传说’ made popular by Jacky Cheung cranked up the heat. She wowed the audience with a totally new rendition of the 1994 hit. She was dressed the part too. Clad in a bare-back halter neck top and matching black pants, the girl-next-door-turned-sexy-vixen was a rare sight for the audience.
She shared that the idea for a mash up with the song ‘Lady Marmalade’ came about when she was humming to it one day and thought that it would be interesting to add another dimension to the arrangement. Her effort paid off as she led the pack in round 2. She would have to brush up her Cantonese if she is to continue singing in that language though.
We totally adore Anson’s versatile voice and song-writing skills. Even though he was criticised for destroying the song ‘山丘’ in round 1, he more than atoned for it in this round. Choosing a song from his idol Phil Chang, who was a contestant himself in Season 2 of I Am A Singer, Anson spared no effort in planning for the arrangement and delivery. The result? A refreshing song arrangement and spectacular performance that brought a new lease of life to the 20-year-old song.
6. 古巨基 (Leo Ku) – 父亲 (O.A.
Leo Ku selected a song by the Chopsticks Brothers called ‘父亲’ or ‘Dad’. Written by one of the members of the Chopsticks Brothers when his father passed away, the lyrics of the song was simple and straight-forward but emotionally charged. The audience was in a sea of tears by the time Leo was done with the song. Leo dedicated the song to his parents who he seldom sees due to his hectic schedule. Leo was great with his hosting skills and connected well with the audience. At one point, he was even teaching them how to speak certain cantonese phrases. Kudos to Leo for juggling both singing and hosting so well.
A-Lin as usual, sang her heart out and delivered a powerful performance. But the difficult song proved too much even for A-Lin as her voice broke at one point of the performance. Thankfully, she was able to keep it in and not let the mishap affect her entire performance. But that was enough to cost her as she landed 6th place, just one ahead of Kit Chan.
