At last, marital arts stars Donnie Yen and Jet Li were the last two left standing for a role in Star Wars Episode VIII. Yip Man star Donnie Yen was eventually chosen for the role as he was reportedly less expensive compared to Jet Li: US$4M vs US$10M.
According to media reports, the two actors were shortlisted from a list of other prominent Asian celebrities such as Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Daniel Wu for the role as a Chinese Jedi in the upcoming instalment of the Disney movie. Yen and Li stood out for their excellent fighting skills and good English. The other actors previously in the running also included Stephen Chow (yes, that’s right), Wang Leehom, and Chang Chen.
According to Apple Daily, Yen’s role was confirmed a month ago but was bound by an agreement not to leak the news. He is said to be in London early August to start the filming of the Star Wars movie.
Episode VIII of Star Wars is expected to debut in cinemas May 2017.
