Harlem Yu bagged some of the strongest singers in this round of 中国新歌声 Sing China including Yang Wei Na and Wang Chuang. In the end, Harlem secured 3 students, which Jay Chou and Na Ying secured two 2 students each. Wang Feng walked away empty handed this week.

Li Rui Xuan, 双刀

First to slide down for Rui Xuan’s performance was Jay Chou. Perhaps it was because the contestant was singing Jay’s song, 双刀 . Rui Xuan started off with a slightly coarse tone before increasing in intensity both in the coarseness of his voice and speed of the rap. Overall, the delivery didn’t work for us as we felt it got too messy towards the end but hardcore rappers might think otherwise. Rui Xuan picked Harlem Yu as his coach.

Wang Chuang, 过不去

Wang Chuang has such a sweet voice when she speaks, coupled with her cheerful disposition, one would expect her to perform a fun, uptempo song. However, Wang Chuang surprised us by picking Ah Mei’s 过不去. What’s more surprising is the fact that she delivered the ballad with so much emotions and feminity. There’s also a raw edge to her voice that we find very alluring. We expected Na Ying to slide down first — and true enough — she did. This was followed by Harlem and Wang Feng. Wang Chuang surprises everyone again by joining Harlem’s team.

Shan Liang, 悟空

We think Shan Liang has picked the right song to showcase the wide range of vocals. Singing 悟空 from Journey to the West, he aptly switched from the main stanza of the song to a dramatic opera style singing. It worked for the song but we wonder how he would sound when he sings the more mainstream songs. Shan Liang chose Jay Chou to be his coach.

Yang Wei Na, Diamonds

within seconds of her performance, Wei Na won the approval of Wang Feng. Like a well-seasoned singer, Wei Na put up a very confident performance of Rihanna’s Diamonds, winning her the approval of all the 4 coaches. Wei Na not only has a strong, resonant voice but really good diction as well — shining bright like a diamond indeed. The contestant picked Harlem as her coach.

Chen Cheng, 夏洛特烦恼

We’ve never heard of 夏洛特烦恼 but we were drawn to the song from the beginning. We later found out it’s the theme song of a comedy from China of the same name. Chen Cheng’s rendition is flawless and has a warm, soothing effect. However, none of the coaches voted for him, we’re guessing it’s because his voice lacked character.

Wan Ni Da (Vinida), 牛仔很忙

Vinida came up a hip hop version of Jay Chou’s 牛仔很忙, singing most of the song in rap. Her good sense of rythmn, creativity in the song arrangement and rapping style won over all four coaches. After much convincing from the coaches, Vinida joined Na Ying’s team.

Yang Shan, 小雪

If you like country style singing, you’ll probably like Yang Shan’s performance. He has a clean, earnest voice that has a care-free vibe to it. Yang Shan joined Na Ying’s team.

Wang Jun Jie, 雨下一整晚

Wang Jun Jie’s singing reminded us of a professional singer performing at a 5-star hotel. Light and jazzy, his voice puts a spring in our step. He won the approval of all the coaches except for Wang Feng. Jun Jie picked Jay Chou.
