Singer 2017 – Episode 3: Tan Jing edges out Dimash in a battle of vocal ranges

Singer 2017 Episode 3 - Tan Jing
Tan Jing

Episode 3 of Singer 2017 (previously called I Am A Singer) certainly brings added pressures to all the singers still in the competition. Other than adding a ‘replacement’ singer, powerhouse Zhang Jie who was in Season 2 of the show, the competition will also bring on a ‘challenger’ singer as well in the same episode. If the challenger succeeds in getting a 4th position or better, the singer with the lowest score gets eliminated once the episode is over.

Here’s a break down of the contestants’ performances in episode 3 of the competition (in order of appearance):

1. Sandy Lam 林忆莲 – Run

In the third round, Sandy took on Leona Lewis’ popular hit ‘Run’. We felt that she started off shaky and wasn’t too confident. Her vocal resonance wasn’t coming through during the first verse but she got better at the end. Overall, we felt that the attractive melody and the audience’s familiarity with the song did helped her garner votes even though her performance is a slightly above average one.

2. Tan Jing 谭晶 – 欲水

Whether she was inspired by Dimash or simply out to prove a point with her operatic performance mid-way through the song, Tan Jing showed the audience (and other singers) what she is capable of. Her experience and confidence on stage allowed her to deliver a dramatic and multi-faceted performance to the audience.

3. Lion 狮子合唱团 – 百年孤寂

The rock band is getting tighter and tighter after each episode. The talented musicians helped front man Jam Hsiao deliver an infectious performance that got the audience up on their feet. If only Jam Hsiao would tone down his death metal screams.

4. Ray Tia 袁娅维 – 蒙娜丽莎的眼泪

It’s getting harder and harder to stand out in this season of the competition. For Tia, even her ‘almost’ whistle voice at the end of the song felt like a battle cry that she needed to stay in the game. Singing a ballad 蒙娜丽莎的眼泪, Tia’s performance consists of an emotional intro before switching up the tempo to end in a tango-esque arrangement. She did all the right things but we felt that her performance failed to connect with the audience.

5. Dimash 迪玛希 – The Show Must Go On

As talented as Dimash Kudaibergen (迪玛希) from Kazakhstan is, he’s operatic talent does not favour the format of the competition. But Dimash seems to challenge that assumption this week by taking on legendary rock band Queen’s The Show Must Go On. And the result was simply breathtaking. If you can ignore his less than perfect diction of the English lyrics, which can be distracting at times, his performance this week certainly showcased a style that is 100% Dimash in both vocals and showmanship. The build up from the start to the epic climax at the end of the song was simply amazing.

6. Teresa 杜丽莎 – Vincent

In stark contrast to Dimash’s powerful and ear-piercing notes, Teresa chose the calm and soothing ‘Vincent’. And we were grateful. Sometimes singing a heartfelt song that can touch the audience is more impactful than just belting out high notes and Teresa’s simple rendition did the trick. Composed and confident, Teresa vocals really came through gave the timeless song the respect it deserved.

7. Zhang Jie 张杰 – 很奇怪我爱你

As the new singer to the competition, Zhang Jie is allowed to select a song from his repertoire. His new song 很奇怪我爱你, which is also one of our favourite, is a walk in the park for the seasoned competitor. Focused on doing every aspect of his song well rather than trying to over reach, his performance was easy to watch even though it was a technically challenging song. Showing his vocal control, range and style, he did a rap at the end of the song, all in one song, he is telling the entourage of singers that he means business.

8. Zhao Lei 赵雷 – 成都

If the earlier part of Singer 2017 episode 3 felt like a buffet, challenger Zhao Lei’s 成都 is a comforting bowl of warm porridge. Zhao Lei’s simple and straightforward songs is a departure from most singer-song writers from China that writes beautiful but high brow lyrics. He succeeded in the challenge and gets to stay on for another round by coming in at a surprised 2nd position this week.

Here’s the final ranking for Singer 2017 – Episode 3:
