After more than what seemed to be an eternal wait since her first comic-book introduction in “All Star Comics #8” back in 1941, we are finally treated with the first-ever big screen adaptation of “Wonder Woman” this June.
Here are the 5 reasons why we are in love with this superhero film:
1. Gal Gadot
Charismatic Gal Gadot might be the only reason you need to decide whether to watch the movie. When Gal Gadot was first cast as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” (2016), there were plenty of naysayers out there criticising her for “being too skinny”, “not muscular enough” or “her breasts are too small” to play the famous Amazonian warrior from DC Comics. But the 32-year-old actress, best known for her role as Gisele Yashar in “The Fast And The Furious” franchise, proved them all wrong and stole the scene in “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice”. Gal Gadot’s memorable cameo appearance made her an overnight sensation and DC movie “Wonder Woman” starring her as the lead as one of the most highly-anticipated summer blockbusters of 2017.
2. This is really the first “Wonder Woman” in-the-flesh movie
Despite Wonder Woman’s enormous popularity in the comic-book industry and general pop culture for more than 70 years, her appearance was surprisingly limited to a 1975-79 television series starring Lynda Carter, as well as various animated TV series and animated movies. The closest thing we ever got to a movie was in the 1974 TV movie starring Cathy Lee Crosby as the title character. So, believe it or not, the upcoming “Wonder Woman” feature will make cinematic history as the first movie to feature the most famous and iconic female superhero of all-time. Besides, it’s not every day that we get to watch a female superhero character lead a big-budget blockbuster.
3. The period setting
For a DCEU (DC Extended Universe) movie, the WWI setting is a refreshing change of pace from the rest of the modern-day time period setting previously seen in “Man Of Steel”, “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice” and “Suicide Squad”. Besides, “Wonder Woman” looks amazing in this period action adventure.
4. Director Patty Jenkins
Prior to her first big-budget project in “Wonder Woman”, Patty Jenkins is relatively unknown in mainstream Hollywood. Her biggest break came from an acclaimed indie drama titled “Monster” in 2003. The movie, which tells the story of a real-life prostitute-turned-serial killer Aileen Wuornos, famously won Charlize Theron an Oscar for Best Actress. Her other credits include directing acclaimed TV series like “Entourage” and “The Killing”. However, Jenkins was supposed to land her first big-studio stint via “Thor: The Dark World” but sadly left due to creative differences. With “Wonder Woman”, it would be interesting to see Jenkins being the first female director to helm a big-budget superhero blockbuster with a female lead.
5. Chris Pine
Although the movie is all about Gal Gadot as “Wonder Woman”, let’s not forget a significant supporting actor, Chris Pine. Judging from the trailers and various movie clips so far, Chris Pine seems perfect as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman’s love interest, Steve Trevor. Pine, who is no stranger to big-budget Hollywood blockbusters, given his extensive experiences in the three recent “Star Trek” movies will certainly add to the charm of “Wonder Woman”.
