For years, green foods like kale, broccoli and spinach have hoarded the limelight with their ‘high nutritional value’ slogan. However, in recent years, black foods like black rice, squid ink and black garlic that are super rich with antioxidants are fast becoming the new darlings.
Jumping on the bandwagon is Men-ichi Ramen, specialising in tonkotsu soup-based ramen. The restaurant embraces ‘black’ by launching a special Ikasumi (squid ink) dish which pairs squid ink with the restaurant’s popular Sapporo miso tonkotsu broth. For a limited period between 17 February 2015 till mid May, Men-ichi Ramen will let ramen lovers tuck into the specially concocted Ikasumi Tonkotsu Ramen. For $14.90, you get to enjoy a warm bowl of springy homemade noodles, succulent char siew, ramen egg and squid ink Sapporo miso tonkotsu soup. If you prefer a richer, creamier broth, go for the Ikasumi Corn Butter Tonkotsu Ramen ($15.90), which comes with butter and sweet corn to your ramen bowl.
Ramen is not the only dish given the squid ink twist. During the same period, Men-ichi Ramen will also be introducing the Ikasumi Yakimeshi ($8.90), a Japanese short-grain rice fried with squid ink, fresh tiger prawns, crabmeat and egg.
If going black is not your thing, Men-ichi Ramen has also added the Tori Paitan Aosa Ramen ($16.90) – a milky, chicken-based broth to its menu. However, we wonder why they are charging a dollar more for adding spicy chilli oil or roasted garlic oil. If you’re stingy, er… frugal (like us), just go straight for the ramen.
