It’s hairy crab season again! Delighting hairy crab lovers with its sweet meat and umami roe, the harvest season for these Chinese mitten crabs starts around Mid-September and lasts through to December every year.
These crustaceans are also making a return at Min Jiang and Min Jiang at One-North from 15 October to 15 November 2015 for lunch and dinner. Prepared by Master Chefs Chan Hwan Kee for Min Jiang and Goh Chee Kong for Min Jiang One-north, here’s what you can expect from their special hairy crab menu.
Min Jiang Goodwood Park Hotel 岷江川菜馆
Min Jiang located at Goodwood Park Hotel offers various ways for your to enjoy these seasonal crabs with a special a la carte menu. Some featured dishes include a combination of steamed Xiao Long Bao with crabmeat (蟹肉小龙汤包), salmon tartar (三文鱼塔塔) and sliced abalone tossed with spicy and zesty lime sauce (生捞鲍鱼) for S$28 per person, steamed hairy crab (清蒸大闸蟹) for S$68 each, baked hairy crab with ginger rice wine wrapped in lotus leaf (荷香姜酒焗大闸蟹) for S$68 each and our favourite steamed hairy crab with glutinous rice served in a bamboo basket (笼仔蒸糯米大闸蟹) for S$68 each.
If simply devouring crab roe is too monotonous for you, Min Jiang at Goodwood Park Hotel also features two set menus priced at S$108 (with steamed hairy crab) and S$128 (with steam hairy crab with glutinous rice) per person. These sets include other dishes like the Chinese-style pan seared Kurobuta cutlet (中式黑猪扒) and glutinous rice dumpling in Osmanthus sweet wine soup (桂花酒酿汤圆). To enjoy the set menus, the minimum order is for 2 persons.
Min Jiang at One-North 岷江在纬壹
Similarly, Min Jiang at One-North also serves a hairy crab trio platter (大闸蟹拼盘) for S$26 per person. The platter consists of baked hairy crab in tomato (番茄焗大闸蟹粉), stuffed hairy crab prawn ball (翡翠蟹粉虾丸) and steamed dumplings with hairy crab meat (蟹粉小龙包).
Hairy crab purists can also choose to enjoy the dish of steamed hairy crab with ginger rice wine (酒蒸大闸蟹) for $68 each. The Chinese believe that hairy crabs are “cooling” (yin) to the body, and hence serving it with ginger and wine is to balance the yin and yang effect in the body.
There are also two set menus at the Rochester outlet. Priced at S$108 (steamed dumplings with hairy crab meat) and S$118 (steamed hairy crab with ginger rice wine) per person, the sets comes with other signature dishes such as crispy noodles with scallops and fresh prawns in X.O. sauce as well as braised spinach beancurd with mushrooms and dried scallops.
