It’s easy to see why so many people are raving about Hattendo cream buns, one of the latest Japanese craze that opened at Tanjong Pagar Centre. During busier periods, diners can be seen queuing at Hattendo Café to get their hands on one of these soft, round buns filled with cold, lusicous cream, priced at $2.50 each. If you’re a bread lover, you should definitely give Hattendo a go. There’s really nothing quite like these buns. And while you’re at it, we can think of at least 5 things you can do that will make your dining experience even more pleasurable.
1.Why stop at one?
Ok, so you’ve just had lunch and thought you’d pop by Hattendo Café to grab a bun for dessert. We did just that on two ocassions and regretted not having bought more. The buns are so small you’ll finish them in a jiffy. You’ll just be left longing for more.
2. It’s ok not to share
If you really, really must share with someone, be prepared for the mess which starts the moment you bite into the bread. After that, passing it around will only cause the oozing cream to run onto your fingers. Messy, messy…
3. Don’t try to tear up the bun with your hands
Some like to bite directly into their buns, other prefer to tear it up into small pieces before popping it into their mouth. We recommend you sink your teeth straight into the buns because you want the cream to end up in your mouth, not fingers.
4. When in doubt, go for the favourite choice
If your brain turns to cream every time you have to make a decision, then we recommend you go for the most popular choice – which is the custard. The azuki bean one is great too but we found the filling a little too sweet. Apart from custard and azuki, the other three flavours are chocolate, matcha and cream.
5. What to do if you’re not eating the buns right away?
Hattendo buns are best enjoyed right away as they are chilled to just the right temperature. But if you’re not eating them in the next 1-2 hours, store it in the fridge and let it thaw for a few minutes before enjoying.
