Get high on live seafood at K-Tower on Amoy Street

9-Tier Seafood Tower with lobster, crab, oyster, fish, prawn, scallop, sea cucumber, shellfish and soup base at $298

Hot on the heels of the Korean seafood tower food craze is the opening of K-Tower, located on Amoy Street.

While the concept is not entirely new, K-Tower stands out from restaurants of similar concept because of the use of mostly live seafood.

For instance, K-Tower uses live — rather than frozen — prawns, crabs, oysters and Boston lobsters to ensure utmost freshness. As the seafood is cooked by steaming with little or no condiments or sauces, the freshness of the harvest really comes through.

Our 9 –tier seafood tower ($298) came with a multitude of seafood like prawns, scallops, Sri Lankan crabs, black mussels, clams, abalone and Boston lobster, among others. The sea cucumber and prawns were the clear winners. Despite being put off by the sea cucumber’s appearance at first (we thought they resembled sea slugs covered with soft spikes), its sweetness and extra springy texture won us over. Fortunately, we summoned enough courage to try it.

The Boston lobster and Sri Lankan crabs don’t disappoint either. Getting to the meat is slightly trickier for the crab, but it helped that the attentive wait staff came by to cut up the crustaceans into smaller, sharing parts that we could just tear apart and dig into.

When all 8 tiers of the seafood were done – it’s time for the grand finale – enjoying the seafood rich broth in the bottom most tier. The kimchi stock we had was good on its own or enjoyed with additional items you can order like shabu shabu meat (pork or beef), different types of meat balls, noodles and more. The stock we had just the right amount of heat, umami goodness and a hint of sourness from the preserved vegetables.

While the 9-tier tower was good for larger groups or families, there are fewer tiers available for smaller groups. If you want more variety, there are also items like the super tasty Korean seafood pancake ($14.90), Ginseng Chicken Soup ($17.90), kimchi fried rice ($9.90) and Shake Shake Rice Box ($9.90), which is rather popular among diners. As its name suggests, you need to shake the bento set to mix all the ingredients such as cut cucumber, cabbage, seaweed and the sauces within. You should definitely give that a shake, well, try, we mean.
