    Many families I know have either opted for eating out in a restaurant or prepare the simpler steamboat get-together for the traditional Lunar New Year reunion dinner. I remember the days when members of the family “fall in” earlier in the day to help mom prep for the scrumptious meal, which typically consists of at least half a dozen dishes. Call me old school but I feel that a reunion dinner is best enjoyed in the comfort of your home, followed by some friendly card games. So, if staying home with your folks is your kind of thing but whipping up dishes and cleaning up afterwards is too much hassle, Red House Seafood’s takeaway tiffin set might have a solution for you.

    Available from 25 January to 22 February 2016, Red House Seafood’s Reunion takeaway tiffin set ((六六大顺套餐外卖) for 6 people is affordably priced at S$188. The three-tier custom-made red ‘tingkat’ measuring 20cm in diameter provides a touch of nostalgia as well as the perfect takeaway container for 3 dishes.

    One of the three dishes available in the tiffin is a wok-fried Sautéed Fresh Lily Bulbs, Wild Mushrooms with Asparagus (野菌鲜百合炒芦笋 – 富贵花开). The dish comprises fresh wild button mushrooms, asparagus, gingko nuts, lily bulbs, onions, carrots and black fungus. According to the restaurant, the ingredients like the vegetables were specially chosen for their firm texture and ability to still maintain its crunchiness during the delivery from the restaurant to your home.

    Our favourite dish of the lot is the Sautéed Trio of Seafood with Pineapple in Chef’s Spicy Sauce (至尊凤梨海三宝 – 三星报喜). Large whole scallops, grouper fillet and succulent prawns are tossed in a Peranakan-inspired spicy sauce together with fresh pineapples, seasonal greens and red peppers. Do note that for this dish, the seafood and seasonal greens may change. So call to check to avoid any disappointment.

    The third dish in the tiffin set is the Braised Pork Belly with Special Sauce (宫廷京烤骨 – 如意吉祥). The braised slab of pork belly in a tangy-sweet sauce reduced from lemon juice, fresh oranges and Chinese herbs calls for more rice! To prepare this dish, the pork belly weighing approximately 600 grams is first deep-fried, before slowly cooking it for another three hours till fall-off-the-bone tenderness. The flavours in this dish are a little different from the usual savoury braised pork belly dish you get in other restaurant. The addition of citruses like lemon juice and fresh oranges cut the richness of the meat and give it a zesty aroma.

    The above three dishes will come together with a Prosperity Raw Salmon Yu Sheng (鸿运鱼生), Steamed Fried Rice Wrapped in Lotus Leaf (和飘香荷叶饭) and Mandarin oranges when you order the set.
