At a small studio called Kousyuuya in Nikko, Japan, a group of talented artists who practice the art of sumie (ink wash drawing) are equipped with a special skill — paint the body of a dragon in a single brush stroke.

This unique brush stroke technique is known as hitofude ryuu or “dragon with one stroke”, a skill that had been hone for four generations, according to Japanese culture blog Iromegane. The artist first paints the dragon head with a smaller brush and then masterfully paints the body in one stroke with a big sumie brush. The unique movement of this brush stroke renders a 3D-like body and scales of the dragon that coils across the canvas.
