Movie stills from The Visit

Every October, most people celebrate Halloween by going around their neighbourhood for some trick-and-treat, carving Jack O’Lantern and donning their favourite blood-smeared costumes. But if you’re not into that, horror movies are aplenty to get you in the Halloween mood. We have curated a list of the best horror movies that were been released in 2015 (so far) for your blood-curdling pleasure.

Insidious 3

After a spine-chilling part one and a lacklustre sequel, Insidious returns for a third and final part. Chapter 3 is the prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family, a family with a history of entering a comatose state and becoming subceptible for ghosts to inhabit his body from another dimension.

Insidious 3 reveals how the gifted psychic Elise Rainier uses her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity from the otherworldly realm The Further.

Crimson Peak

After marrying the charming and seductive Sir Thomas Sharpe, young author Edith (Mia Wasikowska) quickly lands herself at his remote gothic mansion in northern England. But they are not alone. Also living there is Thomas’ sister, Lady Lucille Sharpe, who is also the guardian of her family’s dark secrets. Edith who is able to communicate with the dead begins to hear strange voices and tries to uncover the secrets behind the ghostly visions that haunt the mansion. A charmingly dark movie worth considering for the Halloween.

Goodnight Mommy

Goodnight Mommy is a psychological horror movie from Austria. The critically-acclaimed movie centres around a mother (Susanne Wuest) who is undergoing cosmetic facial surgery and her ten-year-old twins, Elias and Lukas (Elias and Lukas Schwarz). After returning home from plastic surgery with her face covered entirely in bandages, the twins are frightened by their mother’s appearance and strange behavior. The twins begin to suspect that their mother may not be the same person underneath those bandages and bound the woman to the bed, refusing to let her go.

Writer-director duo Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz managed to inject a heightened sense of uneasiness that made this movie unsettling and scary to watch. So be prepared to have someone turn the lights off for you as you may not be able to do that yourself after sitting through the movie.

Return to Sender

More a thriller than a horror movie, Return to Sender is worth a mention on this list as a intensely grippling blind date gone ‘horribly’ wrong. The movie stars Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike as Miranda, a dedicated nurse who is also a good baker. Her perfect world was shattered when she was brutally attacked by her blind date.

After her attacker was convicted and locked up for the crime, a traumatised Miranda couldn’t put her life back together. Desperate for closure, she reaches out to her attacker by sending letters and visiting him in prison. Her slow and deliberate attempt to build a relationship with her attack is for her to seek an opportunity for her to take her revenge.

The Visit

M. Night Shyamalan returns to his roots with the terrifying story of a brother and sister who are sent to their grandparents’ remote Pennsylvania farm for a week long trip. Told to never leave their rooms after 9.30pm at night, the children let curiosity got the better of them and discovered that the elderly couple is involved in something deeply disturbing. The siblings pray for their mother’s return but senses that their chances of getting back home grow slimmer every day.

It Follows

The story involves a college student (Maika Monroe) who gets “infected” by her boyfriend (Jake Weary) after a night of sex. It turns out that the infection is a supernatural entity that appears in different human forms, following her wherever she goes. Like a game of tag, if the entity manages to catch up with her, it would kill her and return to the person who passed the infection earlier. In order to break the curse, she has to have sex with another person. Strange but true.

Despite the bizarre plot, writer-director David Robert Mitchell (“The Myth of the American Sleepover”) managed to craft this metaphor-heavy horror picture involving STD (sexually transmitted disease) and teenage sex with a number of scary scenes that successfully delievered a foreboding sense of dread and eeriness.

From the producers of The Purge and Ouija and the director of Wanted, Unfriended is a thriller movie about an innocent prank started by a group of high-school friends, led by Blaire (Shelley Hennig) that evoked a sequence of events that spirals out of control. The group is subsequently haunted by a supernatural force seeking vengeance over Skype and other social networks for a shaming video that led a vicious bully’s sucide.

The original ‘Poltergeist’ from 1982, co-written and produced by Steven Spielberg, is widely acclaimed as one of the best ever horror films.

The classic film told the story of a family who moved into a home in California, only to discover that the house is haunted and their daughter, taken by the spirit.

The Poltergeist 2015 stars Sam Rockwell (Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2), and is set to be released in the summer this year. Based on what we see from the trailer, it will follow the story of the original to a large extent. Included as well are modern elements such as that creepy smartphone moment.

Needless to say, this remake has got the huge reputation of the original to live up to, and to be entirely honest, we’re not expecting it to be as good. Of course, we’re hoping to be proven wrong.

In the meantime, check out the trailer for the original film and let us know the the comments below on which you prefer.
