Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s next big action film, “Skyscraper”, has added Taiwanese model Hannah Quinlivan to its cast.

The 23-year-old model-turned actress and also wife of pop singer Jay Chou will be joining previously confirmed cast Neve Campbell, Pablo Schreiber, and the recently announced Chin Han.

Along with the Hannah, the movie has also enlisted Chinese American actor Byron Mann, who is most known for his role as Mr Chau in “The Big Short” and Ryu in “Street Fighter”. He also stars as Yao Fei in the “Arrow” television series.

For now, it is not known what roles the two will be playing, but this will be the first time that Quinlivan has acted in a Hollywood production. She is also set to star in a British-Chinese production called “S.M.A.R.T. Chase”, alongside Orlando Bloom and Lynn Hung later this year.

Written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber of “Dodge Ball: A True Underdog Story” and “We’re the Millers”, “Skyscraper” is about a former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and U.S. war veteran Will Ford, who is tasked with assessing security for skyscrapers.

Played by Dwayne Johnson, Will turns into a wanted man during a China assignment when the tallest and safest building in the world is suddenly set ablaze. Will must hunt down those responsible for the fire, and at the same time rescue his family who are trapped inside the building.

The movie is slated for a U.S. release on 13 July 2018.

Donnie Yen training for xXx: The Return of Xander Cage

Any man with biceps as big as a royal gala apple will feel the need to pump it up if they were to star beside a beefcake like Vin Diesel.  That includes “Ip Man” Donnie Yen, who recently decided that he should bulk up for his role in the new movie, “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage”.

As reported by Oriental Daily, the Hong Kong actor, who has been working on several films back-to-back since last year, revealed that he had undergone rigorous training and diet to put more muscles on his already well-built body. The result? A more defined lower abdominal that he thinks will be perfect for his character in the movie.

Our team felt that we all overate during lunch when Donnie added “I haven’t had a real meal for a long time. But my determination exceeds my hunger”. The 53-year-old martial arts actor said he wanted to be “on par” with his co-stars in the new action movie.

“Chinese stars can rival foreign actors, as long as you put in the extra effort. We can do it, despite our age,” he said.

xXx: The Return of Xander Cage is directed by D.J. Caruso and other stars on the movie include Tony Jaa, Jet Li, Samuel L. Jackson and Bollywood babe, Deepika Padukone. The movie is set to hit cinemas on 20 January 2017.

leonardo dicaprio wins osca

The news is out and the internet just can’t stop talking about it! That’s right, Leonardo DiCaprio has finally gotten the one thing that many have been hoping he would get for years and years – an Oscar!

With his Academy Award win for Best Actor for the film, “The Revenant”, Leonardo nearly crippled the internet as the world celebrated his long awaited recognition.

Tons of funny memes and gifs are created for this joyous occasion and everybody can now say goodbye to all the old “Leo Wants an Oscar” or “Give Leonardo DiCaprio an Oscar” memes!

Leonardo started acting when he was 15 and made his film debut in the 1991 film, “Critters 3” when he was 16. He got his first Oscar nomination in 1993 for Best Supporting Actor for the film, “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”. Believe it or not, he has been nominated for six Academy Awards in the span of 13 years – five for acting and one for producing!

Let’s take a look at all the Academy Awards nominations for which Leo had to endure before he lift his first ever Oscar:

1. “What’s Eating Gilbert” (1993) – Best Supporting Actor

Leonardo DiCaprio received his first ever Oscar nomination when he was 19 years old for the Lasse Hallström-directed drama, “What’s Eating Gilbert”, starring alongside 30-year-old Johnny Depp. The award however, went over to Tommy Lee Jones who acted in “The Fugitive”. For the same category, DiCaprio was also nominated at Golden Globe Awards and National Board of Review Awards where he won the latter.

2. “The Aviator” (2005) – Best Actor

At the age of 31, DiCaprio was once again nominated for an American biographical drama film, “The Aviator”, directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale, Alec Baldwin, Jude Law and more. The film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and had won five awards at the Oscars including Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction and Best Supporting Actress for Cate Blanchett. Though he didn’t win an Oscar that year, DiCaprio did manage to take home a Golden Globe Award for the same category. DiCaprio lost the Oscar to Jamie Foxx who played Ray Charles in “Ray”.

3. “Blood Diamond” (2007) – Best Actor

Two years later, DiCaprio was nominated in the same category for the American-German political war thriller, “Blood Diamond” directed by Edward Zwick. The film was nominated in five Academy Awards’ categories, but won none of them. The Best Actor Oscars that year went to Forest Whitaker who played the third President of Uganda, Idi Amin in the critically acclaimed drama, “The Last King of Scotland”.

4. “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014) – Best Actor & Best Picture (as producer)

During this year, many people were confident that DiCaprio would finally get his Oscar for sure as he was nominated for two categories. However, even though the film was nominated in huge categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay, it failed to win in any of the categories. Nevertheless, DiCaprio received accolades from other award ceremonies like Best Actor in a Comedy at the Broadcast Film Critics Association, Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at Golden Globe Awards, #WTF Moment at MTV Movie Awards and others. Matthew McConaughey who also acted alongside DiCaprio in “The Wolf of Wall Street”, won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in “Dallas Buyers Club”.

5. “The Revenant” (2016) – Best Actor (FINALLY!)

Finally, the long-awaited moment that everyone has been waiting for is here – Leonardo DiCaprio received his first ever Oscar for the Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed film, “The Revenant”! With twelve nominations, the film takes home three awards which include Best Cinematography, Best Director and of course, Best Actor for DiCaprio! That’s not all, DiCaprio had also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actor and the BAFTA Award for Best Leading Actor. Seems like 2016 is a great year for Leonardo DiCaprio, and certainly no one deserve the award more than he does!

Brilliantly timed opening by local movie “Long Long Time Ago”, ahead of the other Chinese New Year movie releases, was able to rake in the full benefit of the long holiday period to become the top grossing 2016 Chinese New Year themed movie in Singapore.

Since its release on 4 February, “Long Long Time Ago” from Jack Neo has grossed over S$1.65 million beating other CNY themed releases such as “The Monkey King 2”, “From Vegas to Macau 3” and Stephen Chow’s “The Mermaid”.

The movie that was shot in Ipoh, Malaysia with a budget of S$5 million tells the story of a family’s ‘kampong’ life during the ’60s and ’70s. Unlike the popular “Ah Boys to Men” series that protray life in the army, the director said the nostalgic storyline could have turned some younger viewers away as the theme might be harder for them to relate to.

Nevertheless, the director had received some positive feedback from younger audiences who to catch the movie during the festive period. “Some young people have told me that they enjoyed watching “Long Long Time Ago” with their parents, which is nice to hear.”

“Hopefully they will see that even though the plot is set in the past, the movie touches multiple generations and it is ultimately still a story about them.”

Jack Neo’s “Ah Boys To Men 3: Frogmen” that opened last Chinese New Year made S$2.8 million in Singapore and currently holds the record for the highest box office takings for an Asian film in its opening weekend in Singapore.

The Mermaid movie by Stephen Chow

To get a role in a movie, you will need to be prepared to audition for any role, any time of the day. Apparently, even over dinner. That was what director Stephen Chow made former EXO member, Kris Wu do during his audition for a role in the new movie, “The Mermaid”.

Epoch Times reported that the singer, who recently appeared at “The Mermaid” press conference in Guangzhou alongside the director and other cast members, was asked to play a man suffering from Parkinson’s Disease, and an uncultured nouveau riche while having dinner with Stephen Chow.

He made the cut after giving a convincing performance of the two characters and landed a role to star in the Chinese science fiction comedy film.

Stephen said he wasn’t trying to make fun of the disease, but wanted to see how Kris would try to portray something that has a certain level of difficulty. “Some people may exaggerate it, while others would simply refuse to do it,” he said.

However, Stephen said that he didn’t use the same criteria when auditioning other members of the cast. “For example, Kris has experience in acting, but not Lin Yun. I assess their performance during the audition based on the given situation and see if they are suitable for the role in the movie,” he said.

However, both Kris and Stephen remained tight-lipped about the singer’s role in the movie. The Mermaid will be released during Lunar New Year.

Crypt Keeper from Tales from the Crypt

Remember HBO’s ‘Tales from the Crypt’ from the 90s? If not, you are either too young or don’t subscribe to HBO. But fret not if you haven’t seen the horror series, as it is poised to ‘rise from the dead’, thanks to M. Night Shyamalan, popular director for supernatural productions such as ‘Sixth Sense’, ‘The Visit’ and ‘The Village’.

TNT (Turner Network Television), the company behind the Tales from the Crypt reboot, recently announced plans to create a new 2-hour block of horror programming that would be anchored by the horror anthology series Tales from the Crypt.

The new series will be adapted from the comic book of the same title. Fans of the series would probably be disappointed to know that the signature Crypt Keeper might be dropped in the reboot. However, TNT Chief Kevin Reilly seems to have other plans for the skeletal puppet, a titular character in the series, but he is said to be saving the news for another announcement.

But M. Night Shyamalan’s Twitter post did help to shed some light on the new Crypt Keeper. He confirms that there will be a new Crypt Keeper that is cool, dark and different from the ghoul we know.

Kevin Reilly also shared how the two-hour horror block works. “It’s not a show, it’s an umbrella for what will hopefully be many shows. We’re going to put a variety of different genre shows…all united under the Tales from the Crypt brand. Night is definitely going to direct the first one and we’ll see how that evolves. And we’re definitely going to utilise the underlying comics.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to be teaming up with Kevin Reilly, Sarah Aubrey and the entire TNT team in this unique endeavor,” said Shyamalan. “To be part of such a beloved brand like “Tales from the Crypt”, something I grew up watching, and to also have the chance to push the boundaries of genre television as a whole is an inspiring opportunity that I can’t wait to dive into.”

The original series in the 90s ran for 7 seasons and was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Awards for a whooping 7 times. It also featured notable directors like Richard Donner, William Friedkin, Tom Holland and Tobe Hooper.

We can’t wait to watch the new Tales from the Crypt, expected to be completed later this year.

Brands in Jurassic World

After nearly 14 years, the 4th installment of the Jurassic Park franchise ‘Jurassic World’ certainly did not disappoint. Well, let’s just say that the box office is definitely not going to close the park anytime soon after raking in over half a billion dollars in its global debut.  In Singapore, the genetically modified ‘Indominus rex’ – a hybrid of Tyrannosaurus, Velociraptor, Carnotaurus, Giganotosaurus, Majungasaurus, Rugops and Therizinosaurus and modern animals like cuttlefish and an unspecified species of Tree frog – stomped to number one as well during its debut weekend.

But it wasn’t just the dinosaurs that caught our attention. Half the time we were distracted by familiar brands that were emblazoned across the IMAX screen. So naturally, we became curious about which brands appeared the most in the blockbuster.

According to Concave Brand Tracking, a company that records and analyses brands in entertainment content like music videos, movies and TV shows, the following 6 brands received the most screen time:

  1. Samsung
  2. Mercedes-Benz
  3. Bose
  4. Triumph
  5. Alpha
  6. Jeep

Samsung takes the crown in the battle of the brands in Jurassic World. Other than the Samsung-sponsored pavilion in the theme park called ‘Samsung Innovation Center’, the movie was also full of Samsung phones, TVs, monitors, tablets and a lot of smartwatches. According to Concave, Samsung’s total screen time was more than 5 minutes.

That means that everytime you see a gadget, chances are they are from Samsung.

Next in line is Mercedes. The automobile brand which is still the choice of towkays (bosses) — in Singapore at least — receives almost 2.5 minutes of screen time with its logo visible 85% of the time, every time it appears. Bryce Dallas Howard, the female lead in the movie drives the 2015 GLE Coupé in the first half of the movie and a Mercedes-Benz Unimog truck in the latter half.

Among 2015 movies released so far, Jurassic World contains more brand exposure than Fifty Shades of Grey but is still lags behind Furious 7 and Pitch Perfect 2. You can read Concave’s full report here.

Other than these top 6 brands, we also spotted brands like Hilton Hotel, Pandora, Ben & Jerry’s and Starbucks. Did you notice other brands in Jurassic World? Share with us in the comment box below.

Two upcoming ‘Star Wars’ movies have been announced by Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger at a recent shareholder’s meeting in San Francisco. One of the movies will be the first stand-alone ‘Star Wars’ film, entitled “Rogue One”, and the second movie will be the continuation to this year’s ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, according to StarWars.com. ‘Rogue One’ is set to begin shooting this summer and is slated for release on 16 December 2016. Oscar nominee Felicity Jones for her role in ‘The Theory of Everything’, will be starring in this upcoming film. Director Gareth Edwards will helm the project while Chris Weitz will pen the script.

During the meeting in San Francisco, Disney also showcased the first concept art for Rogue One.

“My personal take on it was it evoked concept art of a video game. It personally screamed Halo to me. It was very dark and done in greens, so it evoked the idea that it was being done under the cloak of night. Dozens of figures in fatigues appeared to be storming something with a strange helicopterish vehicle (open on the sides) in the background, releasing more troops,” said fan site Stitch Kingdom.

‘Star Wars VIII’ will be continuing the saga after the events of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. The film will be written and directed by ‘Looper’ filmmaker, Rian Johnson. The release date for the film is set for 26 May 2017. In the meantime, Star Wars fans can look forward to ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, to be released in cinemas on 17 December 2015.
