As more and more people shoot photos using their phone cameras these days, you wonder how long an analog camera like Polaroid is going to survive. Yet, you love that Polaroid pictures are so much more flattering than those shot on a pixel perfect high-resolution phone. Good news is, the instant print Polaroid is far from dead because Polaroid is finally rolling out the new Polaroid Socialmatic Camera.
Looking like a giant Instagram logo, the Socialmatic is essentially a digital camera with a built-in photo printer. Yes, indeed, like the classic Polaroid camera, the new Socialmatic can print pictures instantly using a ZINK zero ink printer.
The quirky looking camera comes equipped with a 14-Megapixel front camera and a 2-Megapixel rear camera great for taking selfies. On the back, is a huge 4.5-inch touchscreen you can use as a viewfinder to compose shots as well as edit images. The “sociable” camera that runs on Android OS also comes with a built-in 4GB internal storage that stores all your snaps until you find a WiFi spot or tether it to your phone via Bluetooth to upload them to Facebook, Instagram, or other social networks.
You can now pre-order the camera that took 2 years in the making on Amazon for US$299.99 with an expected delivery date of 1 January 2015.
“Polaroid was the original social network; allowing people to instantly share life’s moments in a way that had never been possible before,” said Scott W. Hardy, President and CEO of Polaroid. “Since the introduction of our first product, the Polaroid brand has been a visionary and bold innovator. That tradition continues today as we strive to honor our iconic brand with products that spark creativity and deliver instant fun and the launch of the Polaroid Socialmatic camera is emblematic of this.”
