The all-powerful selfie trend has not only changed the way smartphone makers design their phones, brought about new inventions like the selfie stick but also inspired a US TV series. From the world’s first motorised swivel camera phone, OPPO N3 to the recently launched dual camera dual lens LG V10, these smartphones hope to take the act of snapping a selfie to the next level. But how about simply making the front-facing phone camera, typically used to deploy a selfie as capable as the rear camera?
That’s exactly what ASUS latest smartphone did. Unbashfully named as ASUS ZenFone Selfie, the 13-megapixel front-facing device is the latest addition to the ZenFone smartphone family tailored for selfie fanatics.
Power to selfies
The thinking behind the ZenFone Selfie is all about designing a smartphone that can capture the best possible selfies in the fastest and simplest manner. To start a selfie, all you need to do is to do write a ‘S’ shaped on the high-density Full HD 1920 x 1080-pixel display and it will fire up the 13-megapixel PixelMaster front camera instantly for a shot.
And because you want to look your best in any selfie, there is the new ZenUI Beautification mode that helps soften facial features, slim bloated cheeks and brighten skin tone to enhance the image instantly. We didn’t like this mode in the previous ASUS ZenFone2 as the images looked over sharpened and bright. Let’s hope they they nail the effect this time round.
For low-light selfies, the ZenFone Selfie’s pixel-merging technology is able to increase light sensitivity by up to 4 times, allowing you to capture brighter photos and videos with less image noise at night without the need for flash. If flash is your thing, the ZenFone Selfie comes with a dual-LED, dual-colour Real Tone flash that ASUS says will produce natural-looking skin tones when fired. But that’s not all. In Selfie Panorama mode, the ZenFone Selfie can capture welfie (or groupfie if you like) up to a 140 degrees field of view.
What about the rear camera
It seems like ASUS had everything going for selfie fans. What about the rear camera? ZenFone Selfie’s rear camera can shoot laser! Well, not exactly steel melting ones but its laser is an auto-focus technology for measuring distances and focusing during low-light conditions. The laser auto-focus is also useful when using the 13-megapixel rear camera to take close-up shots of objects as near as 6cm.
